Top attractions in Al Ahsa

Al-Ahsa is the world's largest palm oasis and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018, with a dense concentration of historic palaces, forts, markets, springs, and mountains that make it the Eastern Province's richest cultural destination.

Al-Ahsa Oasis

The world's largest palm oasis, with over 2.5 million palm trees spread across more than 85 km², inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018 as an evolving cultural landscape. It comprises twelve component parts — gardens, canals, springs and historic buildings — so exploring it properly takes more than one stop.

Al-Qarah Mountain

Al-Qarah Mountain

A limestone mountain riddled with natural caves that stay noticeably cooler than Al-Ahsa's outside heat, with traditional pottery workshops at its base. Climbing to the top gives a wide view over the entire oasis, making it one of Al-Ahsa's most-visited sites.

Nature

Asfar Lake

A natural drainage lake fed by surplus water from Al-Ahsa's springs and farms, now a year-round stopover for migratory bird species. A good spot for birdwatching and nature photography, especially during migration seasons.

Nature

Culture

Ain Najm

The remains of a sulphurous hot spring west of Al-Mubarraz, once known for its therapeutic properties under Ottoman rule and used for decades as a healing destination before it dried up. Today the site is primarily archaeological, not an active spring you can bathe in.

Culture

Ain Qannas

A prehistoric archaeological site where remains of ancient human settlement tied to the area's abundant water sources have been found. It's of most interest to archaeology and ancient-history enthusiasts rather than casual visitors, with no developed visitor facilities on site.

Culture
Jawatha Mosque

Jawatha Mosque

One of the earliest sites of Friday prayer outside Medina in early Islamic history, northeast of Hofuf. What remains today is largely ruins and partial reconstruction rather than a functioning mosque — its value is primarily historical.

Culture
Muhaires Castle

Muhaires Castle

A historic mud-brick fort, part of Al-Ahsa's old chain of defensive fortifications, reflecting local mud architecture from before the concrete era. Less well-known than Qasr Ibrahim, but worth a quick stop for anyone following the region's fort trail.

Culture
Sahood Fort

Sahood Fort

Another mud-brick fort from Al-Ahsa's old defensive network, smaller and less restored than Qasr Ibrahim. Suited to visitors interested in comparing local defensive architecture across several sites.

Culture

House of Allegiance

The historic building where Al-Ahsa's residents pledged allegiance to King Abdulaziz after the region's annexation into the Third Saudi State in 1913, now a memorial site and small museum. Its weight is more symbolic — tied to the Kingdom's unification story — than architectural scale.

Culture
Abdul Razzaq al-Arab Museum

Abdul Razzaq al-Arab Museum

A private museum housing heritage items and everyday tools collected over years by its founder, offering a window into Al-Ahsa's social life before modernization. Smaller than the government museums, but more personal and detailed.

Culture
Qasr Ibrahim

Qasr Ibrahim

Hofuf's best-known historic landmark, an Ottoman-era fort later repurposed for administrative and military use, combining Islamic architecture and a military character across a mosque, halls and an interior museum. A good starting point for exploring the adjacent Al-Qaisaryah Market.

Culture

Uqair

A historic Gulf-coast port east of Hofuf that once served pilgrims and traders before overland routes developed, and hosted the 1922 Uqair Conference that drew the borders between Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait. Today it's a quiet, uncrowded coastal and archaeological site, well suited to a day trip from Hofuf.

Al-Qaisaryah Market

Al-Qaisaryah Market

One of the oldest covered traditional markets in the Kingdom, built during Ottoman rule right beside Qasr Ibrahim in the heart of Hofuf. It sells dates, incense, perfumes and traditional crafts — a good place to taste and buy Al-Ahsa dates fresh from source.
